CALIFORNIA: DAY 3
Tuesday we woke up very early, we first went to the 17-mile drive. This is a road where rich people live and you can go there to watch their houses, golf courts, ... We found some pretty nice houses!
Next we went to the Montery Bay Acquarium where we saw some cool animals.
Hereafter we started to drive towards San Francisco where we will be staying for 3 days. We visited the Golden Gate bridge which is very spectacular. And we drove over the famous road called Lombard Street.
We looked for a motel and went to the city to drink some beers in a bar.
This was a very brief summary of our third days, you can watch the pictures here.See you tomorrow !
CALIFORNIA: DAY 1&2
Hi everyone after studying for 4 months in the USA (which was very successful) we went on a vacation to the west coast of America together with my sister Mariet and her boyfriend Jorg.
We first arrived with an airplane in Los Angeles where we met Jorg & Mariet. We drove to LA city with our rented car which is very nice car (see pictures). We went to sleep early because we were all tired from our flight.
The next day we started driving to Montery on highway 1. This is one of the coolest roads in the world to drive on. It's just next to the sea. We stopped in Santa Barbara which is a very nice town. During the ride we also stopped a couple of times to sightsee. We took a lot of nice pictures. When we arrived in Montery we looked for a motel and went to sleep.
This was a very short summary of our first 2 days, you can watch the pictures here. See you tomorrow for an update !
THUNDER OVER LOUISVILLE
I uploaded some movies of our trip to the famous fireworks in Louisville. Check them out here.
I also uploaded some pictures of the month april. Check them out here.
UPDATE
It's a long time ago that I wrote something here, so here we go.
2 weeks ago Sven (our friend from Belgium who studies in Tennessee) visited us here in Kentucky. He arrived on thursday night. The next day we wanted to visit something. Because we woke up late we could only did something that wasn't a long drive. We choose to visit the Kentucky Ale Brewery which was very interesting. We even got the chance to taste 3 kinds of the beer. It was very tasty :) In the evening we went to T-Bombs, the first time for Sven to see that bar.
On saturday we went to the biggest cave of America, mammoth cave. It was a 4 hour drive but it was worth it. In the evening we again went to T-Bombs. After T-Bombs we had a little party in our room which was very funny.
We wanted to visit Fort Knox on sunday but because it was easter and we woke up too late we didn't go. In the evening Sven returned back to Tennessee.
The last 2 weeks were very normal, we had class on tuesdays and thursdays and on monday, wednesday and friday we worked on our project which is almost finished by now.
Yesterday we went to Louisville. We visited the Muhammad Ali Center which is just a museum about the boxer. During the afternoon we watched an airplane show which was very nice and spectacular. In the evening we watched the famous thunder over Louisville which is the biggest fireworks event of whole America. It was very spectacular. They shot about 250 tons of fireworks in the air, that's about 70000 shells :o I recorded the whole show with my camera which I will upload soon.
I will upload some pictures and movies when I find some time for it.
Now we only have 3 more weeks here in Kentucky. 2 weeks of class and 1 week of final exams. After this we leave to California !
See ya later !
SPRING BREAK: MOVIES
I uploaded some movies of my spring break in Miami, Florida. you can watch them here.
SPRING BREAK: SUMMARY
Here is a little summary of my Spring Break 2009:
Friday 6th of march:
We woke up at 10am in Kentucky, picked our car which was a Chevy HHR and started our trip to Cookeville, Tennessee where we picked up our friends (Sven, Rick and Chris). We stayed in Tennessee for one night. You can see the pictures here.
Saturday 7th of march:
We left Cookeville, Tennessee behind us and started our 15 hour during car ride to Miami, Florida. During this ride we had a mechanical failure at our car -the fuel meter failed working- so we drove to Enterprise in Orlando to change a car. We got an SUV now instead of a full-size vehicle, a KIA Sportage. When we arrived we got in our room and we explored Miami City and the beach. You can see the pictures here.
Sunday 8th of march:
We layed down on the beach ("South Beach") and we got burned, even while we used sunblock spray.. But hey, we are in Miami, and we'll just have to live with the pain for some days.. In the evening we sat down at Nikki Beach, a "club" which was very nice. As lunch we ate a sandwich and in the evening we went to some small not that good looking restaurant (because the motel owner told us it's good), but the food was very good ! You can see the pictures here.
Monday 9th of march:
We went on a airboat trip through the Everglades, a national park. We saw alot of alligators, turtles and birds. It was really nice.. I even held a 3 year old alligator in my hands, it was really soft.. Totally unexpected.. Now I can understand why they make bags, belts from it..
In the afternoon/evening we went to the beach again ("Miami Beach" this time) and by being in the water for like 10 minutes we got some more red spots on our bodies.. Fun fun fun..
Afterwards we went to eat a pizza at a small place we looked up from the internet and the pizza was good.. So far we've been lucky by picking places to eat here..
When we finished this we went to look for a place to get a drink, while driving there we passed on some small islands where alot of rich people live.. 4 cars in the driveway: Escalade, BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover,...
In the evening we went to Oceans drive where we saw a lot of nice cars. We looked for a nice spot and drank something in a bar, Dimitri Sven and me ordered some champagne (75 dollars per bottle). Rick ordered a Mojito (27 dollars) which was very expensive. You can see the pictures here.
Tuesday 10th of march:
We went to the Miami Metro Zoo, a zoo with alot of nice animals.. It was fun too see..
After this we went to eat on Ocean Drive, the road that's closest to the beach. It has alot of restaurants, bars and even clubs.. It's a loooooooong road. After the food we went to make some pictures of the Miami skyline at night, Rick had made some very nice pictures. You can see the pictures here.
Wednesday 11th of march:
On wendesday we went to Key West, you have to drive across some small islands to be able to reach it.. A 3-4h drive to get there and to get back. What we saw: alot of water, alot of boats and some sort of contest for girls to become Miss Hawaiian and to win $ 1000. Made some pictures of the sunset, watched a street performer and drove back. You can see the pictures here.
Thursday 12th of march:
On thursday we drove to the NASA - Kennedy Space Center in Orlando. We were just on time for the last tour of the day. We even saw the shuttle that was supposed to be launched today on the launchpad. And ofcourse we also saw some educational and historical events there. In the evening we drove to a motel in Orlando and booked a room. We ate at UNO - Chicago Grill, wich was very nice food again. And drank some beers and had alot of fun in & in front of our room. You can see the pictures here.>
Friday 13th of march:
On friday Dimitri, Sven, Rick and me went to Wet'n Wild which is a outside waterpark. This was very nice and we had alot of fun. I got very burned during this because I forgot to use sunblock spray. Chris went to Seaworld together with some girls he knows from his school in Tennessee.
In he evening we went back to UNO - Chicago Grill where we ate again. In the evening we searched for Chris but we couldn't find him, we left some messages at the girls' room (the ones which he joined to go to Seaworld) also we tried calling him.
After this we bought some beer and mojito and had a fun night in our motel room :). Unfortunately we didn't brought our camera to wet'n wild so I haven't got any pictures of that day.
Saturday 14th of march:
We woke at 11 and started our trip back to Kentucky. We arrived at 12h in Tennessee and we did our laundry over there because they can do it for free over there. At 2am Dimitri and me drove back to Kentucky. We arrived at 7am. We unpacked the car, went to Wal Mart for some food and returned our car to the car rental company.
Sunday 15th of march:
The day I wrote this post. The very last official day of Spring Break 2009. The last 8 days were all about sun and fun.. And I liked it very much !
About Miami: It's all about showing your money, girl and car.. So we got alot of beautiful girls walking around / lying on the beach and alot of awesome cars driving around.. Escalades, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover, Lamborgini, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Bently, Corvette, Mustang, Hummer,.. You can see them all here at Miami.. And then I'm not talking about small Audi's or BMW's or Mercedes'. But more like BMW 6 series, Mercedes from any class with 550 behind it and alot of them are also AMG. We don't even turn our heads anymore when a Mustang or a Hummer is passing by..
You can find all pictures of my Spring Break here. I will also upload some movies later.
Now back to focussing on school again :(
The countdown till Los Angeles, CA is started! 53 days till our arrival, Cali here we come!
SPRING BREAK: OVER
I just arrived back in Richmond, Kentucky and I already miss Florida. Certainly the weather ! From 26 °C to 1 °C pff! Very cold! We arrived at 7 am here at Richmond and after a visit at Walmart we are back in business haha! For the people who may be wondering how Miami is? It is awesome! It is a must-see-thing, Nikki Beach is the place to be to go at South-Beach.
I just uploaded some pictures of the first 6 days, you can see them here. More will be added later. I will also upload some nice movies :)
The countdown till Los Angeles, CA is started! 54 days till our arrival, Cali here we come!
SPRING BREAK: ORLANDO
We left Miami back behind us after 4 days. It was awesome! We took some pictures of the skyline which I will share with you soon.
I am in Orlando (that is also in Florida yes) we visited the Kennedy Space Center this afternoon. Normally there would be a shuttle launch but due to a leak in the fuel tank they cancelled it to next weekend probably. It would be very cool to see a launch but yeah... you can't have it all, right? The space center was also very impressive. It is like a big museum about space but there are attractions so you can have some kind of experience yourself about how a shuttle launch is prepared etc. Pictures of the tour in the JFK Center will follow soon.
We are staying know in the 'Ramada' motel for two days. Tomorrow we will go the waterpark Wet N Wild it should be big fun with enormous water slides and other cool stuff.
SPRING BREAK: COOPER TOWN
It's me again, it's day two in Miami here and I like it: expensive cars, expensive drinks, sun, sea and sunny!
Yesterday we spent our day at the beach, most of use got burned (including me, yes). But it is not that bad. We just got back from Cooper Town, it's kind a national park but in a swamp-environment. We had a trip on the swamp with a propellor driven boat. We saw some nice animals, especially gators :o, we held one too.
We are know preparing ourselves to go to the beach laying and relaxing, it will probably will be Nikki Beach. I will keep you updates when needed ;-)
You can also check some pictures of my second and third day here.
SPRING BREAK: ARRIVED IN MIAMI
We finally made it to Miami! We had a mechanical failure at our car - the fuel meter failed working- so we drove to Enterprise in Orlando to change a car. We got an SUV now instead of a full-size vehicle.
It's night here there is not much to see of the nature or something. We explored the city a bit this night and noticed we're in the neighborhood of 'Nikki Beach'. We were very impressed
I am hitting the sac right now tired after a 15 hours drive! Pictures will follow!
SPRING BREAK: ARRIVED IN TENNESEE
It was an early day this morning, for us, we woke up at 10AM, which would be normally 2PM. We picked up our car exactly at noon, it's a cool chevy... haha NOT!
You can't begin a road trip without a drive thru so we went to KFC and ordered a box with 30 hot wings. We just booked a motel room in the Best Western In motel - thunderbird - in Cookville. I'm at my friends their dorm the moment I write this post. We will have lunch at Cosmo, STEAK!
Check out some pictures of our first day here, I will also post a blog tomorrow when we leave to Florida.
SPRING BREAK PREPARATIONS
In my last post I said we will go to Miami, Florida during spring break, this moment arrived. We will leave tomorrow which is one day earlier then we planned. So we sent an e-mail to enterprise, our car-rental company, to hire our car one day earlier but unfortunately we didn't receive a reply. So to make sure we went to Enterprise ourselves and everything is settled now.
We packed our suitcase this afternoon and cleaned our apartment so we will arrive in a clean apartment when we return. Tomorrow we will claim our car around noon and we'll be on the road around 1PM heading to Tennessee. After a four hour drive we shall book a motel room in the Best Western motel and afterwards we will pick up our friends to have lunch in Cosmo - Chicken Wings.
I promise to keep this blog updated and flood it with pictures or/and movies ASAP and as much as possible. So keep an eye on this site ;-).
WATER PARK OHIO
We went to Ohio, to Great Wolf Lodge. It's a water park, we spent the night there from friday till saturday. Check the pictures here.
3 WEEKS LATER
The last 3 weeks were just 3 regular weeks. On tuesdays and thursdays we had some classes and on mondays, wednesdays and fridays we worked on our internship. My internship project is going well, you can already see a prototype website here.
The weather is very strange here, yesterday the temperature was around -2 °C and today it's 16 °C. Also we had 2 tornado alarm previous week, pretty scary because we don't know what to do when a real one comes.
During weekends we generally go to a local pub in Richmond. It's called 'T-Bombs'. On wednesdays there is a concept 'Whiskey Wednesdays', on that day you can drink a whiskey-cola for only $0.50. Pretty fun over there. We also made some friends over there.
Previous week we had our first test for our midterm exams, went pretty good. Tomorrow and next week we have more tests for our midterm grade.
We also went to some american restaurants like Ryan's (where there is a all-you-can-eat concept) and KFC (kentucky fried chicken). They are both so good :)
In 2 weeks we have spring break (finally). We will rent a car together with our Belgium friends in Tennessee and go to Miami, Florida. I'm so looking forward for this. We will stay there for 5 days. When we return we are also gonna stop in Orlando (Sea World) where we will be staying for on night.
When we are back from Spring Break it's still 7 weeks till we will leave to Los Angeles, California where we will stay for 2 weeks together with my sister Mariet and her boyfriend Jorg. After these 2 weeks we will return to Belgium.
I think that's everything, I will upload some more photos later
ROAD TRIP
We had our first storm 2 days ago, an ice-storm. The first thought we had was: "Ow this is cool!" 'cause school closed for -at that moment- a day. Then the next day we had the same freezing temperatures and ice was staking up the trees, which resulted that the trees and branches snapped... And school closed for the whole week! Some parts of Richmond ran out of power which resulted that we hadn't any internet!
To make a long story short: we got bored just sitting in Brockton so we decided to make a road-trip to Tennessee. Friends Sven and Chris of us are also studying here in the USA at TTU. So said so done: we went to enterprise (the local car-rental company) and hired a car, the cheapest they said. In my opinion the worst car they could offer ahahah! We took a drive of 4 hours to Tennesse, Cookville met up with our friends.
We're know in the Best Western Motel in Cookeville, room 104 Whooohoo. The woman behind the desk over-priced us for three days :o, she charged us 210$ for the weekend but after I complained to here we got a discount of 70$ haha in your face you *****!
I'll upload some pictures after the weekend!
ICE STORM
INTERNSHIP EQUIPMENT
Some equipment I ordered arrived, 2 PTZ (Pan, Tile & Zoom) camera's and a PTZ controller. It's for my internship.
SPECIAL PROJECTS LAB
For our internship we have our own Office in the Business & Technology Center
See more pictures here.
TWO WEEKS LATER
Well after 2 weeks we're doing pretty good: we cook our meals ourself, doing our washes and also iron them - and they are looking pretty good, we doing our own shopping... Doing the housekeeping isn't so hard as they say, it's just enoying (laughing).
Life in USA is easy actually, what doesn't happen today MAYBE will happen day after tomorrow :D. Almost everynight we hear a firetruck, they are just big trucks with christmas lights on them, or a policecar... A lot of crime in Richmond I supose? It's cheap here in Richmond, well... The healthy stuff is quite expensive, but it's worth buying ;-)! We bought 24 cans of Coca-Cola (the cans are bigger then in Belgium -335 ml) for about 8$ that's 6,03 €!
And the people? Eumh like a normal American, 80% has overweight and from the other 20% there is 6% goodlooking (in my opinion..) you can fill in the other 14% of the population. Last night we met some people from the international program, Nadja Barz she is german and is here in acting school. She's also in the tennis team with some friends from Paris and Spain. And the dutchman is everywhere, even in Richmond! There is Ruud De Jong: He's scouted for a the basketball team. He stays here for 4 Years! You also got Martijn, Daan and ... ? I don't know what they're doing.
Wednesday we start with our internship program, we have our own office. You can find me, and also Dimitri every weekday except tuesday and thursday in the BCT building ,room 249.
On tuesday and thursday we are taking some classes, most of them are not to hard so it shouldn't be a problem to get good grades.
That's about it I think? I'll keep you guys updated now and then, thanks for visiting!
NEW PHOTOS
Added some new photos in 'USA Week 1', 'EKU surroundings' and some photo's of our fight. Go to my photo album or just click here.
UPDATE
Today we talked with our internship counsellor and talked about 2 projects we will be working on the next 4 months.
The first is a kind of security camera system, which will be used to record guest presentations. Those recordings will be published on some kind of website. The second project is a system that shows a building map on a computer that is situated at the entrance of a building, a user can choose where he needs to go or who he will be meeting, the computer should print a map how to go to the correct place.
Also we registered for all our classes so we are ready for next week when our classes will start. Monday, Wednesday and Friday we will do internship and Tuesday & Thursday we will take some classes.
We just went to a basketball game in the EKU Coliseum, it's a huge building. It was the Kentucky Colonels against Jacksonville Gamecocks. EKU won with 69-59. It was a very nice game. You can watch some footage of the game in my photo album or just click here.
Now I'm gonna take a shower, watch a movie and go to sleep, see you tomorrow!
BROCKTON APARTMENT 256 ONLINE
January the 5th, Dr Neil Wright picked us up at our motel. The first night we went to Subway, it was a 20min walk.
Once arrived at EKU we did some paperwork, normally we could claim our keys immediately but apparently they lost our keys so we had to wait from 11.00AM till 04.00PM. When we could enter our room we went together with Neil to Wall Mart to buy some personal stuff: bed sheets, food, beverages, etc..
Back on campus we unpacked our stuff, took a hot shower and went lunching with Neil. He took us to a Mexican restaurant. There're still some things we need to do: get a student-card and do an TB-test.
Now we are alone in our building, the students will arrive monday when all classes start. Every evening we watch a movie, Band Of Brothers. Check out the picture and movie section I'll upload some!
ARRIVED IN KENTUCKY
Today we left Belgium behind us and departed to the USA. We took off in Brussels at 9:50am so it was an early morning for Dimitri and me. It was my first flight ever but it wasn't so bad. In the plane we got Chicken and Cheese for diner. It was a bumpy flight so I couldn't sleep, that's why I'm so tired right now.
After an 8 hour during flight we arrived at New York in Newark Airport. In New York we had to pass 3 customs. Then we had to wait 2 hours before we could leave to Kentucky.
The last plane was very small, good we only had to sit in it for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
When we arrived in Lexington Kentucky a person from Easthern Kentucky University picked us up and took us to a motel where we are staying at this moment.
We just went to Subway to eat something, now I'm gonna take a shower and go to sleep because it was a hard day and I'm tired
I'll upload some photo's and video's tomorrow. Bye.
